Frequently asked questions

Caring for pets should be simple, stress-free, and compassionate. Here are answers to some of the most common questions families ask before welcoming Dr.Z into their home.

General Services

Q: What kinds of pets do you see?

We care for a wide variety of animals including dogs, cats, small farm animals and more. If you’re unsure whether your pet is covered, just reach out and ask—we’ll do our best to help.

Q: Do you offer emergency care?

No, we do not handle life-threatening emergencies. If your pet is in crisis (difficulty breathing, active seizures, severe trauma, or collapse), please go immediately to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital. We can provide referrals to trusted local emergency hospitals if you need urgent care.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Q: How should I prepare for my at-home appointment?

Please place your pet in a safe, quiet space where they feel comfortable. Have a clean surface available (such as a kitchen table, counter, or sturdy floor area) where we can examine them. Gather any medical records, recent lab results, or medications so we can review them together.

Q: Do I need to restrain my pet during the visit?

Most pets are calmer in their own home, so restraint is minimal. We may ask for your assistance in gently holding your pet, but our goal is to reduce stress for both of you.

Q: What if my pet hides when visitors arrive?

Try to have your pet confined to one room before the appointment. For cats, placing them in a quiet room with easy access helps. For dogs, a leash can be helpful if they’re nervous.

How In-Home Care Works

Q: How is in-home veterinary care different from a “mobile vet” that operates from a van?

Unlike mobile vet clinics that require pets to be brought into a specially equipped vehicle, we provide care right inside your home. This means less stress for your pet, more comfort for you, and no need to leave your living room.

Q: What types of services can be performed at home?

We provide wellness exams, vaccinations, lab sample collection, ultrasound, acupuncture, chronic condition management, senior pet care, and in-home euthanasia. Some advanced procedures and surgeries are best handled at a full veterinary hospital, and we’ll advise you if a referral is needed.

Q: Can you run diagnostic tests without leaving my home?

Yes, we collect samples such as blood, urine, or fecal tests on site and partner with trusted diagnostic laboratories. Ultrasounds can also be performed in your home with our portable equipment.

Payment & Policies

Q: What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept cash, checks, major credit/debit cards, and digital payment such as Zelle & Venmo. Payment is due at the time of service.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Q: How do I know when it’s time to consider in-home euthanasia?

This is never an easy decision. We offer quality-of-life assessments to help you determine when your pet may be suffering or experiencing more bad days than good. Together, we’ll discuss your options and support you through the process.

Q: Can you help with cremation services?

Yes, we can assist with arrangements and transportation if you choose cremation.
